Mercury, the planet of communication and information exchange, moved into the vibrant sign of Leo on July 2 at 5:50AM PT. This Mercury ingress is more significant this year because it’s going to be woven into the Mercury Retrograde story that begins in the next couple of weeks, but let’s go over what Leo Mercury is encouraging us to do as we spend the summer with our planet of expression in the dramatic and bold sign of the Lion!

When Mercury is in the sign of Leo, this is a period where we simply must prioritize life itself and what lights up our hearts. When it comes to modality, Leo is a Fixed sign; when a sign is Fixed, it has staying power. Elementally, Leo is a fire sign. Fire in astrology symbolizes passion, excitement, and action. Leo is what happens when you take stamina and mix it with exhilaration. No day should be boring! Every occasion is an occasion to dress hot and adorn yourself! There’s no such thing as a guilty pleasure! Live más, baby! 

Another quality we find often represented by Leo is discipline and mastery. When they want something they laser-focus in. It’s the eye of the tiger or uhhhh the lion or whatever big cat you fancy! Often described as the performer of the zodiac, Leo represents creative expression itself. Where the discipline comes in is that anyone with an art practice must recognize the keyword: practice. Doing it! Not just talking about it. Leos have that sparkle in their bloodstream that knows it’s all about how you show up and do the thing.

In astrology, we have to recognize where Leo can sometimes be off base. They can be a bit…reactive. Sometimes hard on others. Mostly hard on themselves. The standards they set are sky high which can build up as physical stress in the body. Leo folks just care so damn much and their back starts to hurt when they realize how they’ve been carrying the load while others coast on their labor. They can end up emotionally caring more than other people around them and sometimes feel isolated that no one is meeting them where they are at.

If you have prominent Leo placements and survived that brief moment of critique, congrats! You survived and we all still love you. Now what’s a way we can work with Mercury while it’s in Leo? We can spend these coming weeks looking at the Leo part of our charts and find ways we can advocate more for ourselves. While Mercury is in Leo we’re encouraged to take artistic liberty. Playing it safe or small is not the way to victory. Mercury Leo doesn’t get tripped up on the idea of ~well what would people think~ because it knows if an idea is palatable for too wide of an audience then it’s not making any major impact. Leo Mercury knows the more specific you get the better and more universal it becomes. As mentioned up top, this Leo Mercury is also connected to the Mercury Retrograde forthcoming. Come August we’ll dig more into the Retrograde and the symbology but it’s important to note that the themes we are working through now in the realms of expressing ourselves and Leo energy may be percolating well into September. Since it’s part of the Mercury Retrograde story we may have ourselves reviewing and adjusting what parts of ourselves we share. Where have we been talking ourselves out of the things we want? Where is our style changing? Style can of course be art and aesthetic things but also the style of how we view life. The things we may want to go after in life are changing and the rest of summer is a time for deep self-exploration and how we keep our internal flame going strong. I think a great exercise this Leo Mercury period would to be make a collage or mood board that’s just so undenibaly YOU. You don’t need to be a blogger or an influencer or creator to world-build.
